Synopsis: For Love or Money
Scene I- A Gypsy Camp
Rudolf, a young solder, is on his way to marry his sweetheart, Ana. He comes to a Gypsy camp and asks for refreshment. The Queen of the Gypsies tells his fortune in a crystal, and warns him that Balthazar, Ana’s Father, has arranged her marriage to Willibald, the stupid son of Ottilia, a rich widow. She advises Rudolf to go with all speed in he would avert the catastrophe, and adds that she and her subjects will follow, and aid him in need be.
Scene II- The Plain
Hastening on his journey Rudolf is misled by the mirage called Fata Morgana, which first appears as a spring in a bower of trees, then as a Satyr, resembling Willibald, leading a horde of revellers who mock the thirsty traveller with illusory wine. For a moment he believes he sees Ana coming towards him, surrounded by rich brides counselling her to marry for money. She drinks from the Satyr’s cup and dances with the revellers, then Willibald appears and carries her off, and the shades of the Fata Morgana disappear. Rudolf falls exhausted. In the village the waiting Ana grows apprehensive, and sends their friend Istvan to search for Rudolf. Istvan finds Rudolf and sends for help. The Gypsies respond. Rudolf is revived and they all hurry on their way to rescue Ana from the unhappy fate of marrying a man she does not love.
Scene III- The Village
The lovers are reunited and flee together to the Gypsy camp. As they pass Ottilia’s house they disturb the stupid Willibard, who comes out to see what is going on, but the Gypsies gag and kidnap him before he can give the alarm. Soon the Bridesmaids and Groomsmen come to prepare Ana and Willibard for the wedding, and their disappearance is discovered. Their frantic parents search high and low, until Ottilia spots a Gypsy lurking in the village, and, immediately concluding that the Gypsies are the cause of the trouble, leads a search party in the director of the Gypsy camp.
Scene IV- A Gypsy Camp
Meanwhile the lovers have found sanctuary with the Gypsies, whose Queen conceives the idea of marrying Willibard to the idle Bear Trainer, who longs for a rich husband. She persuades Willibard that it is a Gypsy custom to blindfold the Bridegroom at a wedding, and then places him next to the Bear Trainer. The double wedding takes place (the one for love, and the other for money). The search party approaches, but the parents arrive too late, the ceremony is over. The Queen of the Gypsies prevails on the parents to tale the unexpected turn of events with good grace, and the wedding festivities proceed. The Russian Plyasoon hired by Ottilia arrives to dance for the guests, and finally the Gypsy Queen invites everybody to dance and celebrate the wedding.
