Scene I

A Prince is celebrating his betrothal to the Princess of a neighbouring realm. Suddenly a Demon King appears, casts a spell over the Princess and spirits her away.

Scene III

Tired by his wanderings, the Prince sleeps on the seashore. He wakes and asks the gnomes from the caves if they have seen the Princess. They tell him she is among the waves. He finds her again for a brief moment, but she is swept from him by the sea-spirits.

Scene V

The Prince returns home disconsolate. He has not found his Princess. His court is in festive mood and they persuade him to join them. Suddenly an old crone appears. By an act of kindness the Princes breaks the Demon’s spell, finds that the crone was the Princess in disguise, and there is general rejoicing as the Demon retires, powerless.
